What South African employers expect from your CV
The SA convention has its own rules — get them right and you read as a polished, shortlist-ready candidate.
2–3 pages, well structured
One page for entry-level, two for mid-career, up to three for senior roles. Lead with a 3–5 sentence summary, then reverse-chronological experience with quantified achievements.
Languages matter
With 11 official languages, listing your home language and others you speak is genuinely valued by South African employers — include it as its own section.
Drop ID, photo & personal info
Modern SA practice leaves out your ID number, photo, marital status and religion — not legally required, and they can invite bias. Add them only if a job ad specifically asks.
Beat Pnet, Careers24 and the ATS filter
Real ATS scoring
Paste any SA job ad and get a genuine match score, the missing keywords, and an AI rewrite that closes the gap — before recruiters on Pnet, Careers24 or LinkedIn ever see it.
References, done right
Include two contactable references — or mark them "available on request". CopilotResume keeps the layout clean and ATS-readable either way.
Tailored per vacancy
A generic CV loses in a competitive market. Tailor your summary, skills and highlights to each role in one click — without inventing anything.

South African CV — frequently asked questions
How long should a South African CV be?
Two to three pages is standard in South Africa — longer than a US resume. As a guide: one page for entry-level, two for mid-career, and up to three for senior or management roles. Keep it focused: clear sections, white space, and quantified achievements rather than long duty lists.
What should a South African CV include?
Contact details at the top, a short summary statement (3–5 sentences on your skills, experience and the role you want), work experience in reverse-chronological order, education, skills, and your languages — South Africa has 11 official languages, so listing your home language and others is valued. References can be included or marked "available on request".
Should I put my ID number, photo or personal details on my CV?
Modern advice is to leave them off. South African labour law does not require your ID number, marital status, religion or a photo, and including them can invite bias — so omit them unless a specific job ad asks. A clean, skills-focused CV is the safer, more professional choice.
Do South African employers and recruiters use ATS software?
Yes. Large SA employers, and recruitment platforms like Pnet, Careers24 and LinkedIn, run applications through ATS software before a human sees them. CVs built with tables-as-images, graphics or photos often get misread and silently ranked lower. CopilotResume templates are ATS-safe, and the built-in ATS Checker scores your CV against any job ad and shows the keywords you are missing.
How do I adapt my South African CV for jobs in Europe?
Three shifts: (1) Length — cut to 1–2 pages for most of Europe. (2) Personal details — definitely drop the ID number, photo and personal info for the Netherlands; for Germany a photo is often still expected. (3) Keywords — European roles are competitive and ATS-filtered, so mirror the job ad’s exact terms. See our Dutch CV and German CV (Lebenslauf) guides for the country-specific format.
