What is a AI Trainer?

An AI Trainer produces the human judgement that models learn from. That means rating and ranking model outputs, writing the guidelines other raters follow, adjudicating disagreements, and maintaining the quality of a dataset that will directly shape how a model behaves. The work is often described as annotation, but the skill is judgement under an ambiguous rubric.

It is one of the few AI roles that does not require an engineering background, and one of the fastest routes into the industry from teaching, editing, linguistics, content moderation or customer support. Progression is real: rater to guideline author to quality lead to programme owner, and the last two are genuinely senior positions.

How to write a AI Trainer resume that stands out

Quantify agreement, not volume. "Raised inter-rater agreement from 0.61 to 0.87" is worth more than the number of items you rated — anyone can rate quickly, few can raise consistency.
Show that you wrote guidelines, not just followed them. Authoring a rubric is the step from rater to specialist, and it is the clearest signal of seniority in this field.
Name the judgement areas you worked in: factual accuracy, safety, instruction following, tone. Employers hire for specific queues, not for "annotation" in general.
Describe an edge case you resolved. The whole job is what happens when the rubric does not cover the case in front of you, and one concrete example proves more than any adjective.
Do not undersell non-AI background. Teaching, editing, moderation and support all build exactly the judgement this work needs — say what transferred, explicitly.
Mention scale and structure: how many raters, how many time zones, how disagreements were escalated. Quality work at scale is an operations skill and it is screened for.

Do I need a technical background to be an AI Trainer?

No. Most roles need strong reading, careful judgement and clear writing rather than programming. Some senior positions ask for basic spreadsheet or SQL skill for quality analysis, but the core work is human evaluation.

Is AI training a career or temporary work?

Both exist. Task-based rating work is often flexible and short-term, but there is a genuine ladder above it — guideline author, quality lead, programme manager — and those roles are permanent, well paid and in short supply.

What should I put on my CV if my work was under NDA?

Describe the type of work, the scale and the outcomes without naming clients or projects: the judgement domain, the number of raters supported, the quality metrics you moved. That is normal in this industry and no reviewer expects otherwise.

What is inter-rater reliability and why does it matter on a CV?

It measures how consistently different people apply the same rubric, usually as Krippendorff’s alpha or Cohen’s kappa. It is the main quality metric in annotation work, so citing it signals you understand what the job is actually optimising for.
