Nurse Manager Resume Example

What the role involves, a real NHS-style CV example, and what shortlisting panels actually score — then build your own in minutes.

What is a Nurse Manager?

A Nurse Manager is a registered nurse who leads a service rather than an individual caseload. Depending on the organisation the title covers ward managers, unit managers, matrons and specialist workforce roles — in the NHS typically Band 7 to Band 8a. The common thread is accountability: for staffing, for budget, for clinical governance, and for the standard of care delivered by a team.

Day to day the work is a mix of operational and professional leadership. That means building and assuring safe rosters, managing an establishment against budget, handling recruitment and retention, reviewing incidents through systems such as Datix, preparing evidence for regulatory inspection, and developing the people in the team through preceptorship, appraisal and supervision. Many Nurse Managers still hold a clinical component and keep their registration current through revalidation.

Workforce-facing variants of the role — Nurse Manager (Workforce Development), Workforce Lead, Deputy Chief Nurse — have grown quickly since safer staffing became a board-level assurance issue. These posts lean less on bedside skill and more on establishment review, demand modelling, temporary staffing governance and international recruitment.

Key skills for a Nurse Manager resume

  • Establishment review and safer staffing (NQB standards)
  • e-Rostering and roster assurance (HealthRoster / Allocate)
  • Bank and agency governance, temporary staffing spend control
  • Budget management against a pay envelope
  • Clinical governance, incident review and Datix trend analysis
  • CQC preparation and evidence gathering
  • Recruitment, retention and international recruitment pathways
  • Preceptorship, appraisal, coaching and clinical supervision
  • Safeguarding (Level 3) and policy authorship

How to write a Nurse Manager resume that stands out

  • Lead with scale. "640-WTE establishment across two sites" or "32-bed unit, 58 staff" tells a panel more in five words than a paragraph of duties. Shortlisters are looking for whether you have operated at the size of the post advertised.
  • Quantify money and safety together. "Agency spend down 31% with no breach of safer staffing thresholds" is far stronger than either half alone — it shows you did not buy the saving with risk.
  • Name your Band. UK nursing CVs almost always state Band 5/6/7/8a per role, and its absence reads as odd or evasive to an NHS panel.
  • Mirror the person specification. NHS shortlisting is scored against essential and desirable criteria almost literally, so use the exact terms in the advert — establishment review, revalidation, clinical governance — rather than synonyms.
  • Evidence people outcomes, not just process. Retention, preceptorship completion and OSCE pass rates are the numbers that distinguish a manager from an administrator.
  • Keep the clinical thread visible. Panels want to see you have not lost credibility on the floor; one line on current registration and any retained clinical practice is usually enough.

Nurse Manager resume — FAQ

What band is a Nurse Manager in the NHS?

Most Nurse Manager posts sit at Band 7 or Band 8a under Agenda for Change. Ward and unit managers are commonly Band 7; matrons and workforce or service-level managers are usually Band 8a, with larger portfolios reaching 8b. The band depends on the size of the establishment and budget you hold, not the job title alone.

Should a nursing CV be one page or two?

Two pages is the norm for an experienced Nurse Manager, and NHS panels expect it. Unlike some private-sector conventions, a UK nursing CV is expected to carry registration details, band history and evidence against the person specification — which rarely fits on one page.

Do I need to include my NMC PIN on my CV?

You do not need to print the PIN itself. Stating that you are NMC registered, which part of the register you are on, and that your revalidation is current is sufficient at application stage. Employers will verify the PIN directly at pre-employment check.

How do I move from Band 6 to a Nurse Manager post?

Panels look for evidence you have already done parts of the job: shift coordination, roster input, budget awareness, audit ownership, mentoring or practice assessing, and leading a piece of service improvement. Name those explicitly on your CV even when they were not in your job title — acting-up periods and project work count.
