Conversation Designer Resume Example

Writing meets UX meets AI — and a CV that has to prove all three without reading like three different people.

What is a Conversation Designer?

A Conversation Designer decides how an assistant talks: what it says, how it recovers when it misunderstands, when it should hand over to a human, and how it behaves when it is wrong. The visible part is wording. The valuable part is the structure underneath — flows, fallbacks, escalation and the boundaries of what the assistant should attempt at all.

Language models changed the work rather than removing it. When responses were scripted, the designer wrote every line. Now the model generates the words, so the designer shapes behaviour: persona, tone, refusal patterns, what to do with uncertainty. It has moved closer to product design and further from copywriting.

It is one of the few AI roles with a genuine path from writing, UX and linguistics rather than engineering, which makes it valuable to anyone in those fields looking to move. Employers are largely hiring for judgement about human interaction, not for technical depth.

How to write a Conversation Designer resume that stands out

    • Lead with an outcome from a real assistant. "Reduced failed containments by 34%" is the sentence that gets you interviewed; a list of flows you designed is not.
    • Show the failure work. Anyone can design the happy path — designing what happens when the assistant does not know is the actual craft, and the part hiring managers probe.
    • Include scale. Conversations per week tells a reviewer immediately whether you have worked on something real.
    • Prove you can work with the model, not around it. Evidence that you shaped prompts or guardrails alongside engineers separates you from a pure UX writer.
    • Mention transcript analysis explicitly. Designers who read real conversations make better decisions than those who work from personas, and employers know it.
    • Keep tone and persona guidelines on the CV as an artefact you produced. It is the deliverable most likely to be reused across teams, so it signals influence beyond your own project.

    Conversation Designer resume — FAQ

Is conversation design still needed now that LLMs generate the wording?

More than before. When the model can say anything, someone has to decide what it should say, when it should decline, and how it hands over. The role shifted from scripting lines to designing behaviour.

Do I need to be technical?

No, but you need to be fluent. Understanding prompts, retrieval and where guardrails sit lets you have real conversations with engineers. Writing code is rarely required.

What portfolio works best for this role?

Sample dialogues including failure paths, a persona and tone document, and a before-and-after showing a design change and its measured effect. Reviewers want to see how you think about breakdown, not just your best flow.

    Which backgrounds transfer well?

UX writing, content design, linguistics, theatre and scriptwriting, and customer support. Support in particular is undervalued — nobody knows the failure modes of a conversation better than someone who has repaired them for a living.
